Summer censorship
I have been busy lately (afterall, it IS my vacation), but I still read my daily comics like a good little 12 year-old trapped in the body of a 30 year-old... and lo and behold: censorship at the Washington Post.
I sometimes read the WP for my comics because I have connection issues with comics.com... so when I saw that they refused to publish Boondocks because of content issues, I figured it was worth a visit to ucomics.com to check it out
Now, I am all for respecting family of victims and respecting the memory of the dead. Trivializing someone's death into a comic strip and comparing it to reality TV is in bad taste without a doubt...
...but...
...I work with teenagers every day. I see how much knowledge they lack when it comes to current events. They are beyond clueless when it comes to local, national and international news. If it appeared on Access or ET, then maybe they will remember. If it's mentioned by some movie star, maybe they'll remember. If it affects their own personal ego (cell phones, illicit substances...), maybe they'll remember. And if it's blasted on the news 24/7, then maybe they'll remember. When news has to compete with "reality TV", students would rather focus on the false reality. Call it ignorance, call it indifference call it even satisfying your own personal pleasures (what? getting a kick out of the news...pffffft!), kids do not watch the news. And if they do, they don't understand it.
